Mathematically, this game is the "no three in line" problem. Computers have found all the possible puzzle solutions up through 18×18 grids. The biggest solution ever found is from a 52×52 grid, where the computer was able to place the full 104 neighbors. Nobody knows if it's possible to do it on every grid size.
